Made by Google Conference Unveils New Gemini AI Assistant Experience
At yesterday’s (8/13) Made by Google event, Google showcased the new assistant experience of Gemini AI in real-time. In addition to launching the most diverse Pixel phone series to date, the event featured a live demonstration where the AI assistant Gemini interacted throughout the event, aiming to dispel doubts about the practicality of AI and ignite consumer interest in Pixel phones.
Google Introduces Powerful AI Gemini for Consultation, Tutoring, and Assistance
Last year, Google introduced its powerful AI Gemini, demonstrating its capabilities in roles such as consultation, tutoring, and assistance. However, post-event, internal employees revealed that Google’s showcase videos were edited, and the actual operations were not as seamless as portrayed.
During the event, Google employed a live demonstration where they interacted with the AI assistant through conversation. When product manager Dave Citron asked the AI assistant to check his calendar to see if he was available to watch a friend’s performance (by uploading a photo of the event), it took three attempts to succeed. Although initially challenging, Gemini AI excelled in tasks like composing emails and brainstorming.
In addition to Google’s Pixel phones, the event also showcased the use of Samsung’s Galaxy and Motorola phones, highlighting the comprehensive integration of Google AI within the Android ecosystem.
Addressing security and privacy concerns, Google emphasized that AI data usage would require user permission. All computations would occur on Google Cloud or directly on Gemini Nano processors, ensuring no data leaves the user’s device. Moreover, Google’s AI technologies are exclusively used, distinguishing them from Apple and Microsoft, who collaborate with OpenAI or other AI vendors.
According to reports from a renowned magazine, Gemini Live’s voice dialogue mode closely resembles ChatGPT’s voice chat feature. However, Gemini Live operates on a subscription-based model, requiring users to be advanced paid members to access the service, currently available only in English.
Google Unveils Pixel 9 Series with Tensor G4 Chip
This year’s Made by Google event, held two months earlier than usual, showcased Google’s determination to outshine Apple and emphasize live demonstrations despite minor hiccups. Google introduced four models in the Pixel 9 series, including the base model Pixel 9, the high-end Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold, all powered by the Tensor G4 chip.
Collaboratively developed by Google’s DeepMind team, the Tensor G4 aims to leverage the advantages of Gemini’s multimodal models. Google aims to spark consumer interest in Pixel phones and disrupt the smartphone market dominated by Apple and Samsung. However, market rumors suggest that the Tensor G4 chip in this generation did not provide significant enhancements and could be considered an interim model.
Market expectations are now focused on the next-generation Tensor G5 chip, with speculation from Android Authority suggesting it will be manufactured by TSMC, potentially offering substantial upgrades. Shifting production from Samsung to TSMC could signal a significant shift in Google’s delicate relationship with both collaboration and competition with Samsung.
