Binance Executives Granted October Rehearing! Nigerian Government Directs Focus on Healthcare Issues First

Breaking News: Binance Executive Granted October Review as Nigerian Government Orders Resolution of Health Issues

On September 2nd, Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, a former US federal agent, faced his first trial in Nigeria on charges of money laundering and tax evasion. Since his detention by the Nigerian government in February, over seven months have passed, indicating a significant deterioration in his health. Reports suggest he is in poor condition, suffering from untreated malaria, pneumonia, and severe tonsillitis.

Mark Mordi, Gambaryan’s lawyer, submitted a new bail application on September 2nd, citing health reasons and the worsening condition of his client. The American citizen is reportedly battling malaria, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and complications from a herniated disc, severely impacting his mobility. Mordi requested a six-week bail period for Gambaryan to receive treatment.

In a viral video, Gambaryan is seen struggling to walk into the courtroom, sparking widespread criticism within the cryptocurrency community, with Fortune Magazine’s Jeff Roberts condemning the Nigerian government’s handling of the situation. Local media cited clinic data indicating Gambaryan’s refusal to take prescribed medication and food, which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) referenced during the September 4th bail hearing to challenge Gambaryan’s health claims.

Contrary to Western media perspectives, local reports from Nairametrics quoted the government’s response, stating that despite Gambaryan’s lawful detention, he received medical assistance and consular services from his home country, ensuring his right to a fair trial and quality healthcare. The Nigerian authorities emphasized that only the court could alter the terms of his detention.

Judge Emeka Nwite postponed a decision on Gambaryan’s bail application until October 9th after hearing arguments from Mark Mordi and prosecutor Ekele Iheanacho on September 4th.
